Career overview

What a day looks like

An analyst collects data on income and spending, puts it into tables and looks for patterns. Then they prepare conclusions and explain to colleagues what the numbers show and what risks they carry.

Try it yourself this week

  • 30 minutes

Make your own monthly budget on paper

    1. Write down where your money comes from: pocket money, gifts, a part-time job. If you don't have any money, make up an amount for practice.
    2. Write down what you usually spend money on and split it into needs and wants.
    3. Make a table: income, spending, what's left.
    4. Work out how you'd save for a goal, for example a new phone or a trip, and how fast you'd get there.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you like putting numbers in order and deciding what to spend money on.

  • 40 minutes

Come up with a small business and work out if it would pay off

    1. Choose an idea a school student could do: baking for a school fair, helping people with their phones, taking photos at a graduation party.
    2. Write down who would buy and why they'd buy from you in particular.
    3. Make a table: what the money goes on, what the price is, how many sales you'd need to get your costs back. Don't buy anything — this is a calculation on paper.
    4. Find two similar offers online and compare your idea with them. Write down what was more interesting: coming up with it, doing the numbers or imagining how you'd sell it.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether turning an idea into a plan with numbers excites you — and whether the chance that buyers say no puts you off.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Make a table of your spending

Keep a spending table for a week and find the biggest item. Think about what could change.

  2. In six months

    • Solve a pay-back task

Invent a small venture and work out on paper whether it would pay for itself. The task "Invent a small venture" fits.

  3. In a year

    • Ask someone who does this job

Through people you know, and together with your parents, find out what data an analyst works with and how they explain the results.

How to get into college

College gets you a profession faster than university. You can apply after grade 9 or after grade 11.

  • Colleges accept students both after grade 9 and after grade 11. After grade 9 you study longer — about 3 years 10 months; after grade 11, about 2 years 10 months. The exact length depends on the college and the specialty.

  • About 80% of students admitted to colleges in the 2024/25 school year study on a state order, which means in state-funded places (in 2023/24 it was about 70%). But each college and each specialty has its own number of state-funded places.
