Notary

Checks documents and certifies them so that deals and agreements between people can be trusted.

What a day looks like

People come to a notary with important matters: selling a flat, sorting out an inheritance, certifying a power of attorney. The notary reads the documents carefully and checks that everything is stated clearly and doesn't break the rules. Then they explain to clients in plain words what they are signing and what will follow from it. Sometimes it is hard for people, for example when it is about family matters, so the notary needs to be calm and tactful. If something is wrong, the notary says so and suggests how to fix it. By the end of the day the documents are neatly done, and people leave feeling that everything was done right.

Try it yourself this week

  • 30 minutes

Write the rules for a family agreement on chores

    1. Ask your parents if they agree to play this game with you.
    2. Make a list of household chores and write down who does what and on which days.
    3. Write down what happens if someone doesn't keep their promise and how you'll talk it through.
    4. Read the text out loud and check: are there any phrases that could be understood in different ways? Fix them.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you're good at reaching agreements and noticing vague words that lead to arguments later.

  • 30 minutes

Make your own monthly budget on paper

    1. Write down where your money comes from: pocket money, gifts, a part-time job. If you don't have any money, make up an amount for practice.
    2. Write down what you usually spend money on and split it into needs and wants.
    3. Make a table: income, spending, what's left.
    4. Work out how you'd save for a goal, for example a new phone or a trip, and how fast you'd get there.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you like putting numbers in order and deciding what to spend money on.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Write the rules for a family agreement

Do the task on household chores: write the rules and check for any sentences that could be understood in different ways.

    • Find out why documents matter

Ask your parents to show you what documents your family has, and find out what each one is for. Don't photograph or send any important personal details.

    • Talk to someone who does this job

Through people you know, and together with your parents, find a lawyer or notary and ask what their work is like.

  2. In six months

    • Train your attention to detail

Once a week, take a short text and look for typos and mistakes in it, then check yourself.

    • Practise explaining hard things simply

Take a rule or a law from a school textbook and explain it to someone younger so that they understand.

    • Make a glossary of legal words

Write down 15 words you hear in the news or in social studies lessons, and explain their meaning in your own words.

  3. In a year

    • Find out what education you need

Together with your parents, find out where you can study law, which subjects you need and what is required after your studies.

    • Go to an open event

Find a school meeting or an open day where you can hear lawyers speak, and ask a couple of questions.
