Chef

Turns ingredients into dishes that are tasty, look good and are safe to eat.

What a day looks like

A chef's day starts before the guests arrive: they check the food, wash and chop vegetables and do the prep. Then the kitchen gets hot and noisy, orders come in, and everyone on the team knows what to do. The chef makes sure each dish is tasty, looks good and goes out on time. Sometimes things go wrong, for example something burns, and it has to be fixed fast. Between orders they clean their station, because a clean kitchen is a must. By the end of the shift they are tired, but they remember the happy guests and know tomorrow will be even better.

Try it yourself this week

  • 40 minutes

Cook a dish from a recipe and write down what you'd change

    1. Choose a simple recipe and ask an adult in advance which ingredients you can use from home.
    2. Cook the dish with an adult nearby: they'll help with the stove and sharp knives.
    3. While you cook, write down how long each step takes.
    4. Taste it and write down three things: what worked, what you didn't like and what you'd change next time.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you enjoy the cooking itself, or care more about the result and how people react when they try it.

  • 30 minutes

Make your own monthly budget on paper

    1. Write down where your money comes from: pocket money, gifts, a part-time job. If you don't have any money, make up an amount for practice.
    2. Write down what you usually spend money on and split it into needs and wants.
    3. Make a table: income, spending, what's left.
    4. Work out how you'd save for a goal, for example a new phone or a trip, and how fast you'd get there.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you like putting numbers in order and deciding what to spend money on.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Cook three simple dishes

Choose the recipes together with adults, cook while they are with you, and after each dish write down what worked and what didn't.

    • Learn the kitchen hygiene rules

Find a simple guide on washing hands, storing food and handling raw meat. Learn the main rules.

    • Learn to use a knife safely

Ask an adult to show you how to hold a knife properly and cut vegetables, then practise.

  2. In six months

    • Plan a family menu for a week

Together with your family, plan dishes for each day and write down what food you will need.

    • Talk to someone who does this job

Through people you know, and together with your parents, find a chef and ask how their working day goes and what the hardest part is.

    • Put 3 favourite recipes in a folder

For each one, describe what you need, the steps, and add a photo of the finished dish.

  3. In a year

    • Try helping out in a kitchen

Ask people you know if you can help at a family event or in the school canteen, if the adults are OK with it.

    • Find out where to train and what your options are

Together with your parents, find out where you can train as a cook, what documents you need and how admission works.

How to get into college

College gets you a profession faster than university. You can apply after grade 9 or after grade 11.

  • Colleges accept students both after grade 9 and after grade 11. After grade 9 you study longer — about 3 years 10 months; after grade 11, about 2 years 10 months. The exact length depends on the college and the specialty.
