Career overview

What a day looks like

A police officer patrols the streets, takes reports, goes out to incidents, fills in paperwork and works by clear rules and orders.

Try it yourself this week

  • 20 minutes

Prepare what to say when calling 112 and practise out loud

    1. Find out your exact home address (street, building, entrance, floor) and save it in your phone's notes. Don't call anyone — this is practice.
    2. Put together a short order for what to say: what happened, where, how many people, whether there's danger right now.
    3. Say three made-up situations out loud: a car crash in your yard, smoke in the stairwell, someone feeling unwell on the street. Time yourself to see if you can keep it within 30 seconds.
    4. Write down where you stumbled and what helped you speak calmly.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you can stay calm and speak clearly when you imagine a dangerous situation.

  • 30 minutes

Make an evacuation plan for your flat or classroom

    1. Draw a plan of the flat or classroom: doors, windows, corridors, stairs.
    2. Use arrows to mark two ways out and a meeting point outside.
    3. Write down five rules for a fire or an earthquake from a reliable source: a textbook, the emergency services website.
    4. Talk the plan through with someone in your family, or just read it out loud and check: is one minute enough to understand where to go?

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you like thinking about safety in advance — and enjoy acting by clear rules.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Practise speaking clearly in an emergency

Do the task about calling 112 and three made-up situations.

  2. In six months

    • Learn how rights work

Read in a law textbook or a reliable source what rights a teenager has, and retell them in your own words.

  3. In a year

    • Talk to someone who does this job

With your parents or a teacher, find someone who does this job and ask what their working day looks like and what is hardest about it.

What it pays

Pay varies by region, experience and employer. The figures below are approximate ranges from public sources.
