Paramedic

Is the first to reach a person who is unwell and gives help before they get to hospital.

Career overview

What a day looks like

A paramedic goes out on calls as part of a crew, quickly assesses the person's condition, gives emergency care and decides whether hospital is needed. The work is in shifts, on the road and in all kinds of conditions.

Try it yourself this week

  • 20 minutes

Prepare what to say when calling 112 and practise out loud

    1. Find out your exact home address (street, building, entrance, floor) and save it in your phone's notes. Don't call anyone — this is practice.
    2. Put together a short order for what to say: what happened, where, how many people, whether there's danger right now.
    3. Say three made-up situations out loud: a car crash in your yard, smoke in the stairwell, someone feeling unwell on the street. Time yourself to see if you can keep it within 30 seconds.
    4. Write down where you stumbled and what helped you speak calmly.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you can stay calm and speak clearly when you imagine a dangerous situation.

  • 35 minutes

Make a home first-aid guide from a reliable source

    1. Choose three everyday situations: a cut, a burn from hot water, a nosebleed.
    2. Find out what to do from a reliable source: a school textbook, the Red Crescent website or a clinic's website. Don't take advice from comments.
    3. For each situation, write 3–4 short steps and one line: “when to call 103 or 112 urgently”.
    4. Show the guide to an adult and ask if everything is clear. Note which part was harder for you: working it out, or imagining blood and pain.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you're interested in how the body works and how to help someone — and how you feel about the unpleasant side: blood, pain, responsibility.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Practise calling 112

Do the task about what to say when you call the emergency services.

  2. In six months

    • Take a first-aid course

Find a first-aid class and take it together with adults.

  3. In a year

    • Talk to someone who does this job

With your parents or a teacher, find someone who does this job and ask what their working day looks like and what is hardest about it.

What it pays

Pay varies by region, experience and employer. The figures below are approximate ranges from public sources.

Colleges

You can apply after grade 9 or 11 — you get a profession faster than at university.

How to get into college

College gets you a profession faster than university. You can apply after grade 9 or after grade 11.

  • Colleges accept students both after grade 9 and after grade 11. After grade 9 you study longer — about 3 years 10 months; after grade 11, about 2 years 10 months. The exact length depends on the college and the specialty.
