Marketer

Thinks about how to tell people about a product or service so that they see why they need it.

Career overview

What a day looks like

A marketer studies who needs a product and what matters to people about it. Then they come up with how to tell them: in social media, on a poster or in an advert, and look at what worked and what did not.

Try it yourself this week

  • 40 minutes

Make a poster for a school event

    1. Choose an event: a real school event or a made-up one, for example a board game night.
    2. Write the key facts on a sheet of paper: what, when and where. Nothing else goes on the poster.
    3. Draw the poster by hand or in any free editor that's already on your phone and doesn't need registration. Pick two or three colours and one big image.
    4. Show the poster to your parents or a friend and ask: what did they understand at first glance? Write down the answer.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether you enjoy coming up with an image and choosing colours, or get more out of thinking through exactly what to tell people.

  • 40 minutes

Come up with a small business and work out if it would pay off

    1. Choose an idea a school student could do: baking for a school fair, helping people with their phones, taking photos at a graduation party.
    2. Write down who would buy and why they'd buy from you in particular.
    3. Make a table: what the money goes on, what the price is, how many sales you'd need to get your costs back. Don't buy anything — this is a calculation on paper.
    4. Find two similar offers online and compare your idea with them. Write down what was more interesting: coming up with it, doing the numbers or imagining how you'd sell it.

What you'll learn about yourself: Whether turning an idea into a plan with numbers excites you — and whether the chance that buyers say no puts you off.

What you can do next

  1. Next 3 months

    • Invent an advert for a familiar object

Choose an ordinary thing and write three different short adverts for different kinds of people.

  2. In six months

    • Break down someone else's advert

Find an advert that caught your attention and write down what it appeals to and who it is aimed at.

  3. In a year

    • Ask someone who does this job

Through people you know, and together with your parents, find out how a marketer checks that their ideas work.

How to get into college

College gets you a profession faster than university. You can apply after grade 9 or after grade 11.

  • Colleges accept students both after grade 9 and after grade 11. After grade 9 you study longer — about 3 years 10 months; after grade 11, about 2 years 10 months. The exact length depends on the college and the specialty.

  • About 80% of students admitted to colleges in the 2024/25 school year study on a state order, which means in state-funded places (in 2023/24 it was about 70%). But each college and each specialty has its own number of state-funded places.

  • There are also paid colleges. For example, training as a nurse at ADILMED costs 450,000 ₸ per year. Check the price and conditions on the college's website.
